"Walrus Days" teams up veteran writer/producer Gary Murtha with two very special artists, David Fox and David Dubowski. "Walrus Days" is a flashback to the 60's and 70's.
"Strawberrywalrus" is a hat tip to that little band called the Beatles. "Rear View Mirror" reminds us of those great days of cruising and drive-in movies. "When The Walrus Met The Blossom" takes us back to those wonderful Wah Wah guitar days. "Mist of Morn" and "Sunshine Soldier" take a look at the Vietnam War. Four instrumental compositions form bridges to different songs and add texture to the soundscape. The album finishes with a powerful song called "The End." It was a time of happiness, sadness, musical explosion, pain, and love. It was a time of peace and war. It was our Walrus Days.
REAR VIEW MIRROR
I remember those days well
I never had a care in the world
crusing one drive-in to the next
my 55 Chevy, and my girl.
Baby moons and fuzzy dice
little 283 bored to a 301
oil cloud followed behind
man those days were fun.
8 track player the new sound
always plenty of things to do
curly-Q fries and cherry coke
metal flake paint job, so blue.
Beatles music was oh so right
played tackle football til it was dark
Elvis at the drive-in movie tonight
romance and pop corn while parked.
Always a drag race to be found
heading down main street at night
tires burning out, no cops around
Ford and Chevy was the main fight.
Vietnam started taking friends
draft numbers filled the ranks
didn't seem like it would ever end
Uncle Sam needs you, gee thanks.
Older now and can't go back
thoughts bring smiles to my brain
but will never forget those days
the joy, the hurt, the summer, the summer rain.
In my youth, it was so cool
so many good times at school
memories in my rear view mirror
I survived it and so did you.
WON'T THAT BE COOL
Smiles on all faces
take lip down the road
hate gone, not a trace
attitudes turn into toads.
No suffering nor sorrow
no place for the vain
all living for tomorrow
all pleasure no pain.
A friend helping friend
all hands holding hands
love that never ends
peace throughout the land.
Days full of sunshine(start chorus)
no self righteous rules
A world without fear
Won't that be cool.
Nations without race
no political fools
no more hectic pace
Won't that be cool.(end chorus)
Bullies gone forever
take their hate away
no need to fear them
love is here to stay.
No place for crime
no yelling no names
happy all the time
no diseases no pain.
Money is not the goal
no stabbing the back
more to life than that
no need to attack.
(repeat chorus)
Hunger takes a break
foods plenty for all
sizes are not noticed
even small stand tall.
Divorce can't be found
suing a thing of the past
no lawyers are around
good things can now last.
Open up your hearts
come on out and play
a bright new day awaits
love, peace here to stay.
(repeat chorus)
WOODSTOCK DAYS
(Instrumental)
WHEN THE WALRUS MET THE BLOSSOM
Seventy-one was the time
when young hearts opened their eyes
seventy-one brought another gift
as a new life began his cry.
Seventy-five another blossom was born
and love's family continued to grow
seventy-five life was still so very young
with a future we did not know.
Scotty, bats, balls, toys and dolls
filled a house with laughter and fun
telephone always alive with calls
never knowing when we had to run.
Funny how small the world can be (start Chorus)
when the heart is allowed to fly
funny how clearly ones eyes can see
when love's smiling face floats by.
A beautiful world soon began
when the Walrus met the blossom
a new world with love in hand
and future as bright as the sun. (end Chorus)
Eighty-two the second of two sons
took his place in the home
eighty-two life was still very young
as new dreams continued to roam.
The family grew and shared
the house was really alive
never could extra time be spared
the family was set at five.
Boots barks, dates arrive, and cars roar
too much to do and not enough time
then suddenly no ringing at the door
graduations leave school days far behind.
(repeat chorus)
Came a time when no dogs barked
a time when the phone no longer rang
came a time when silence was stark
a time when no childrens voices sang.
And as the sun begins to set
and life's book begins to close
the Walrus and the blossom
know their love continues to grow.
Life's poetic mixture feels the cold wind blow
while time is chilling the morning sun
as our twilight years turn to a cold grey snow
our hearts still remain so very young.
(repeat chorus)
CRUISIN
(Instrumental)
STRAWBERRY WALRUS
Who was the Walrus?
we may never know
the man in the bright red field
or from yesterdays show?
You can look in the sky and see
strawberrys there for the taking
it can be what you want it to be
your Walrus is just awaking
The Walrus is gonna get you
better hold on to what you've got
the Walrus will let you
find out what you're not.
Strawberrys floating in the stream(start chorus)
the Walrus is on the move
strawberrys in a field of green
the Walrus is in his groove(end chorus)
Karma can be so very real
take you down a winding road
life can hide what you really feel
welcome to the Walrus's abode.
Magical is the Walrus's power
with strawberry fields all aglow
the sky is alive with diamond showers
welcome to the Walrus's show.
The Walrus will caress you
take you to another time and place
the Walrus may make you blue
as your mind begins to replace.
(Repeat Chorus)
HUNS INC.
No one could have warned me
as I headed off to Vietnam
that 13 months could take this boy
and spit him out a man.
I remember when I first saw it
the dragon rising from the sea
I thought it was really beautiful
but it was really a bad dream.
Our company was fox two seven
gotta love those crazy Marines
our leaders took us all to war
and to hell and back it seems.
We chased those black pajamas
rice paddies, leeches and rain
from Chu Lai to DaNang and more
with laughter and with pain.
We Marines of Huns incorporated
our motto was WE YEARN TO BURN
we met the enemy when we could
tho many of us never returned.
Heres to the men of Fox two seven
a toast for all who passed the test
let us vow to never forget
those souls we have laid to rest.
VIETNAM DAYS
(Instrumental)
SUNSHINE SOLDIER
Carries his heart on his sleeve
his thoughts on his banner
he's a soft spoken youth
until you stoke his anger.
Wants the killing to end
no matter who stops first
no more caskets to send
love and peace are his thirst.
Burned his card, said no
many sleepless nights
said he would not go
said he would not fight.
A sunshine soldier(start chorus)
believer in peace and love
a sunshine soldier
with a mission from above
a sunshine soldier
ready to push and shove
a sunshine soldier of love.(end chorus)
But they kept on dying
caskets filled with young
he vowed to keep trying
a soldier of the sun.
Went to church one Sunday
name of his dead friend read
died in the name of war
sorrow in heart, pain in head.
Seems an impossible task
said he would see it through
removing wars's ugly mask
sunshine soldier's right to do.
MIST OF MORN
In the mist of morn
a soldier cries
a soldier dies
humanity's painful morn.
The crackle of bacon
where the family stays
a million miles away
in the mist of morn.
Nineteen years since born
a mother cries
a mother sighs
a journey just begun.
In a foreign land
falls a young man
doing what he can
doesn't understand.
In the mist of morn
the family awakes
smell pancakes
papers for the news.
The air cracks loud
a soldier cries
a soldier dies
in the mist of morn.
Warm red all around
spills upon the ground
a silent sound
in the mist of morn.
Person at the door
must be a mistake
please say no more
hearts start to break.
The young man cries
closes his eyes
mom and apple pie
in the mist of morn.
SPAGHETTI WESTERN
(Instrumental)
THE END
It began in a storm
and grows so it seems
into this thing
this sleep
this dream.
A well without bottom
rises up to wake me
with crys of shame
and tears
who's to blame.
Man what did we do?
why did we do it?
a dark deadly scream
over this mess
this dream.
Will we ever learn
not to crush the world
with hate, more hate?
love lost love
too late.
Chaos surrounds pools of
screams and pain
where is the rain
to cool
our insane brains?
Explosions of light
cast shadows on humanity
will it last
will another night
let the darkness pass?
Sun burning flesh
can man survive
life's burning rain
or will hearts explode
into rivers of pain?
Love must open
the locked gate
a decision to make
save our souls
before it's too late.
