Unique song-poem music with stories about life. Simple as that. Pop, folk, and country style music that will tug at your heart. "Moon shot" teams up veteran writer/producer Gary Murtha with legendary performer David Fox. Song-poems have been around for just over 100 years. During it's history, the song-poem business has been overlooked by the mega giant music industry. Song-poems are not any different than other songs in that they all are an expression of someone's soul. An expression waiting for an unsuspecting ear to pick up, dance with, and listen to. These songs will take you back to your childhood days of the 50's and 60's with a simplicity of lyrics and warmth of melody. They are songs that everyone can relate to and enjoy. Old fashion, maybe, but with a grace that only gets better with age. So sit back and listen to a new sound about the past.
MOON SHOT
When I was but a boy of three
each night I'd gaze upon the moon
mom said it was made of cheeze
and she sang me a little tune.
On the moon there was an old man
had all the cheeze he could eat
but he never washed his hands
so his mom made him eat with his feet.
I never questioned my momma's word
as momma's are true and never lie
but it was the strangest story I'd heard
kind of like the one, when pigs fly.
Sometimes I'd play with my sling shot (Start Chorus)
used rocks that looked like the moon
remember those summer days so hot
and that funny old man in the moon.
Who'd of thought that little old man
with cheeze stacked from here to there
didn't have time to wash his hands
and probably not even his ears.(End Chorus)
Days turned to years, soon I was a teen
showing all the pretty girls the moon
laying in the grass in my new blue jeans
those days of youth passed way to soon.
Marriage was my new guiding light
a baby boy soon blessed a room
eyes watered and I smiled one night
when I caught him gazing at the moon.
On the moon there was an old man
had all the cheeze he could eat
but he never washed his hands
so his mom made him eat with his feet.
(Repeat Chorus)
PRETTY LADY OF TURTLE POND
She arrives early each morn
silver diamonds on the water blue
takes a seat next to the pond
pretty lady comes just for you.
Takes out crumbs of bread
lays them on the wooden bench
waits for them to show their face
in flys a yellow belly finch.
But that's not what she's here for
takes glasses from her paper sack
scanning silver flickers on the pond
looking for them to come back.
Turtles turtles all around(Start Chorus)
waiting for a piece of bread
turtles turtles up and down
pretty lady shakes her head.
Birds fly in to watch the show
fish scurry for their fair share
pretty woman with bag of crumbs
shows nature that she cares.(End Chorus)
She's the pretty lady of turtle pond
patiently waiting for them to arrive
waiting, humming a little song
she sees one come up then dive.
The time has finally come
she picks up bread in her hand
turtle heads bobbing up and down
flicks crumbs and watches them land.
Smiles and laughter fill the air
as the turtles bob up and down
it's a dance of nature's grace
glad pretty lady keeps me around.
(Repeat Chorus)
TALE OF OLD SCHOOL ROAD
I know a true story that needs to be told
about a couple who walked down old school road
they met at the school many many years ago
shared the same classes and dreams I was told.
She was a young lass with sunny smile and hair
he a stout lad who was as strong as a bear.
they laughed, they grew, and one day they wed
she in her white dress he with smile on his head.
They raised a strong family as good as they might
shared dreams, love, and prayers every night
and each day they set out on their loving walk
laughing, holding hands, just right before dark.
For years they walked down that old school road
they loved their special time, this I was told
they shared thoughts and stories of days gone by
with a sparkle in their eyes, love was not shy.
Take my hand my dear and walk by my side (Start Chorus)
the road may be dusty, but it has nothing to hide
we will see life's ups and downs come and go
but our love is our's alone to share and to hold.
Laugh and enjoy each warm and beautiful day
let our hearts be forever young and ready to play
so hold my hand tight my dear and never let go
we'll travel together through the cold cold snow.(End Chorus)
They would stop and chat with the grazing deer
chased turkeys that really had nothing to fear
watched the soaring hawks come down for the night
smiled, laughed, and kissed like lovers might.
Then a summer passed and they were not seen
it was as if their walks had never really been
one day she was spotted walking alone on the road
her shoulders were low as if carrying a heavy load.
But she picked her head up and watched the birds fly
she would stop, look back, wipe tears from her eyes
you could hear her talking, sad almost silent words
waiting, wanting, hoping for them to be heard.
She continued to walk through the cold winter snow
continued her talk as if she had something to show
one day she was followed, curious just wanting to know
They saw her, but there were no footprints in the snow.
(Repeat Chorus)
MARY FARM GIRL
She picks small flowers from the field
puts a few red ones in her hair
waves to the birds floating in the sky
Mary farm girl really does care.
Calico dress flapping in the breeze
woven wood basket on her arm
picking berries for that special pie
Mary loves her life on the farm.
The sun shines upon her small face
while Mary hums a simple song
wearing a white apron trimmed in lace
this shouldn't take my Mary very long.
Cherries, berries, sugar and more(Start Chorus
making a special pie just for you
sunshine covers my Mary's face
she's always happy, never blue
Always a smile, never any tears
my loving, laughing, loving Mary
always sharing natures bounty
she's my laughing, smiling Mary.(End Chorus)
Picks up a stick and hits the grass
bugs run from the sharp sound
the air is full of escaping wings
life is always jumping around.
The house rises up behind the wheat
a smile, a wave, and she's home
children stir, fresh pie soon to eat
why Mary's life is never alone.
Outside the window is her garden
washing the new found berries
smiling, singing her happy song
my always laughing, loving Mary.
(Repeat Chorus)
FIRE FLY
(Instrumental)
PLAY AWAY THE DAY
What happened to those days
when being young was fun
all we had to do was play
oh for those days in the sun.
Pet turtles and hampsters too
jump ropes and our silly songs
beans that jumped, and jello blue
those old days where I belong.
Days in the sand, on the swings
reaching for that sky of blue
taking all each day would bring
my dog, my frog, and you.
Home run derby at the park
always finding something to play
no fear of playing after dark
Twenty-five cent movies everyday.
Never dreamed it couldn't last(Start Chorus)
always looking forward never back
never thought those times would pass
older now looking back, lost track.
Want sunny days to always stay
wanting good times to hurry back
wanting to just play away the day
older now looking back, lost track.(End Chorus)
Band-aids fixed all our pains
puddles were oceans to wade
splashing, dancing in the rain
every new day a memory made.
Wirly-bird seeds filled the air
Holes in jeans were earned
chasing slinky down the stairs
barrels of trash were burned.
Hamburgers were four for a dollar
neighbors knew neighbors names
ferris wheel made kids holler
wishing now could be the same.
(Repeat Chorus)
MARTHA LONG FACE
If you want me little woman
you know where I can be found
on the corner of 24th and nowhere
picking up pennies from the ground.
If you have some extra change
please lay them heads up down
take two steps back and run
as soon as they hit the ground.
Martha long face my precious dear
took mine away yesterday morn
flowers were around, it was warm
hole in my pocket, yes it was torn.
Not crazy my good old friend
Martha long face is the one to fear
she'll snatch those copper pennies
always stealing my bubbly cheer.
I'm grey, grey as grey can be (Start Chorus)
as blind, blind as blind can see
Martha long face will not let be
poor old winkle-ly wrinkle-ly me.
My teeth left my gums long ago
time took all my sex drive too
always having trouble on the stool
poor old me, what am I to do? (End Chorus)
Starts another day sliding out of bed
on the matress, lays them heads up down
she stomps away shaking her teeth
Martha my dear is good to have around.
Fresh is a brand new sunny day
shaved the grey hair from my ears
gave my Martha long face a wink
took my pennies to buy a beer.
Life is too short so just let me be
it's a lot shorter, you will see
if you don't stay on your couch
and leave those pennies for me.
(Repeat Chorus)
AUNT HELEN'S PRAYER
Funny what sticks with you
as years of life drift by
funny little moments in time
the good old days gone by.
Winter on grandpa's farm
could be so very cold
walk across the top of fences
on the drifts of blown snow.
Sleeping in a cold dark room
had me nervous as can be
Aunt Helen made me repeat
a prayer she said to me.
Now I lay me down to sleep(Start Chorus)
with peanuts at my feet
if I die before I wake
you know I died of a belly ache.(End Chorus)
Oh those days of my youth
chickens running for their life
kitchen table always full
full of fresh baked apple pies.
Grandma kept herself busy
and was always so nice
uncles, aunts talked news
about hog and corn prices.
Wonderful times on the farm
my memory brings to light
like Aunt Helen's funny words
on that cold winter night.
ROCK'N ROLL CHRISTMAS
The tree stands so tall, so green
with colorful gifts soon to see
snow will never stop so it seems
the heart's spirit of love flys free.
Snow sparkles and blankets the ground
beautiful colors of Christmas abound
kids sleding up and down the street
gold, silver, red just hanging around.
Adults sip hot chocolate and talk
and share their stories of past days
children take the dog outside to walk.
Vinyl spins as an old record plays.
It only comes once a year (Start Chorus)
full of family joy and love
and it's a day we hold so dear
celebrating the gift from above.
Don't forget the meaning of the day
as the spirit will save your soul
but also celebrate this day of love
with some good old RocknRoll. (End Chorus)
Can't wait to open the gifts anymore
kids grab and look for their names
someones late and knocking on the door
we are sure glad that you came.
Dad's turn and his eyes get real bright
he's in a very happy mood today
opens a record album to his delight
has a new rocknroll record to play.
Hot rolls and pies, it's time to eat
God bless us all, a child was born
I'll take two pieces of Turkey meat
please pass the potatoes and corn.
(Repeat Chorus)
LOOKING BACK
(Instrumental)
DUST KICKER
I was born on the side of a dusty road
he was in his bottle while she cried
a broken down car in a country ditch
he drank while I watched her die.
Too young to feel that dust in my eyes
too young to understand about her death
too young to know the dust in my mouth
kicking fighting for my very first breath.
Too young to remember whispers of love
flashing red lights pulling up on the right
hooting of the owl on the tree above
somehow I survived that cold dusty night.
The moon hides behind the gathering clouds
not knowing my life was falling apart
a man in his bottle, not very proud
an unknown journey, a life ending start.
A cool wind blows across my life(Start Chorus)
dust clouds circle in my heart
why does it have to be full of strife
it's been this way from the very start.
Lift this drifting ill wind so I can see
give me a sign to open life's door
smooth out this dusty road for me
so I'm not a dust kicker anymore.(End Chorus)
Months turned to years when he was gone
he stayed around until I could walk
always pulled by the drifters song
he wanted to run, I wanted to talk.
Dust continued to blow across my mind
I was older now but still an angry teen
waiting for the dance on Friday night
shaking the dust from my faded blue jeans.
On the move to the next nowhere town
looking for another reason to cry
churning out jobs to the lost and found
always another reason, more beer to buy.
Sitting by the side of this dusty road
watching my life aimlessly drifting by
staring at the bottom of this bottle
wiping dusty tears, always asking why.
(Repeat Chorus)
YELLOW ROSE
Once our voice was young
words without much thought
tears would sometimes flow
flowers could be bought.
How often we do hurt
those closest our heart
time does seem to heal
all our mindless thoughts.
A single yellow rose(Start Chorus)
a little bit of sun
let you know I'm sorry
just to let you know.
I want to hand you
a single yellow rose
just to let you know I'm sorry
just to let you know.(End Chorus)
But alas comes a time
you realize your wrongs
you yearn for forgiveness
but they are forever gone.
Remember their smiles
their hopes and their dreams
remember tears and hurt
when your words were mean.
(Repeat Chorus)
Remember your success
your hopes and dreams
remember their smiles
you know what I mean.
Time has opened your eyes
as you look back today
many memories to cry
many wishes for yesterday.
(Repeat Chorus)
WAITIN AT THE GATE
Who is this man they call Jesus
walks around preaching peace and love
takes time to change water into wine
always talking about his father above.
(waiting, waitin at the gate.)
Travels the dusty roads of life
through the fields of olives and sheep
always tending to the weak and helpless
teaching and soothing those that weep.
This loving young man called Jesus
everyone should really get to know
this traveling salesman of the pearly gates
has a contact for the biggest of shows.
A man of youth and firm conviction (Start chorus)
A man with heart full of compassion
A man who will share all that he has
A man who must complete his mission. (End Chorus)
Time and patience will not last forever
the day of judgement draws so near
it's a very simple decision to make
and one that you should not fear.
So welcome this man called Jesus
take him into your heart and house
welcome him to share your life's travel
share his joy with your children and spouse.
Open up you mind, your heart, your soul
this man called Jesus is waitin at the gate
he wants you to meet his loving father
where the restful peace of eternity awaits.
Coming with comforting words for the heart (Start Chorus)
Coming to every village with open hands
Coming to save your ever lasting soul
Coming to offer you the promise land.
A man of youth and firm conviction
A man with heart full of compassion
A man who will share all that he has
A man who must complete his mission. (End Chorus)
