Beatles Cavern Club

The Cavern Club was an old wine cellar/basement with three tunnels connected by archways. On 7 August, 1957 the Quarry Men appeared at the Cavern Club and played some Elvis Presley numbers. The owner sent them a note to "Cut out the bloody rock." The Beatles first lunchtime appearance in the Cavern was on 21 February, 1961 and their first evening session on 21 March, 1961. They played a total of 292 times through August 3, 1963 for about 25 shillings a session.

PAUL McCARTNEY-First session at the Cavern Club was with the Quarrymen on 24 January 1958.
GEORGE HARRISON-First session at the Cavern Club was with the Beatles during the lunch session on 9 February, 1961.
RINGO STARR-First Cavern Club appearence was on 25 May, 1958 with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes although there is a belief that his first session was around 1 August, 1957 with the Eddie Clayton Group. First appearence with the Beatles was on 22 August, 1962.
PETE BEST-Last session at the Cavern Club with the Beatles was on 15 August, 1962.
BRIAN EPSTEIN-First saw the Beatles perform at the Cavern Club during the lunch session on 9 November, 1961.

On Thursday, 5 April 1962 the Beatles Fan Club presented the Beatles at the Cavern Club. The Beatles played the first half in their leather suits while opting for the cleaner new image of their Beno Dorn suits and ties for the later half of their show. A b/w photo card, shown above, was issued with the date of the event to the reverse. This was to be the Beatles first group signing session.

On the 3rd of November, 1963 the Cavern Club aquired the space next door (8 Mathew Street) and expanded the Cavern Club by adding a recording studio (Cavern Sound), which opened 15 October, 1964. The first group to record was the Clayton Squares.

The Cavern Club was closed down between 1973 to 1984. The original club was knocked down in 1982 with the bricks being saved and treated and eventually used to build the Cavern Club at it's new location.
